Group,

Based on posted comments concerning this problem over the last several
days, I have some observations:

1. I suspect that Gene did not install "Remote Desktop" procedure
software but instead turned on an option. There is a difference.

RDP is a core component of XP Pro and typically is updated by Windows
Update, not uninstalled/installed by the user. System File Checker may
be use to refresh suspected corrupt system files.

This ended up being a "red herring" causing a chase after viruses,
worms, corrupt drivers, etc.

2. Suggestions to dump a current OS for another are really out of line
and in the long run aren't helpful.

Gene had a functioning network crafted out of 2 functioning systems with
a relatively minor problem, the floppies were inaccessible.

If the problem were a "show stopper" such as rig control, real-time
response, data loss or the like, then maybe another OS might offer some
relief.

In this day and age, multi-boot OS systems are easily put together
supporting file transfers between them. The same is true of local
networks.

"Virtual" machines, which allow running one OS inside another, and OS
simulators often allow software written for one machine to be run on
another.

3. Problem statements and specifics could always be better.

Want to improve? Read:

 http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Had we known that the below message appeared:

Stop 0x000000f7 (xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx)
"Problem Name" exception xxxxxxx from xxxxxxx
Address xxxxxxxx has base at xxxxxxx - vetfddnt.sys

The focus would have then been better placed.
(It's a mock up of the kind of messages Bill puts on BSoDs.)

4. Problem resolution descriptions could always be better.

"When I removed the option to scan the floppy disk the problem went away."

Where did that come from?

If this problem was asked on several forums, the resolution probably
should be posted there also.
