To be completely honest, the hardware has not locked itself because you
are not using Windows. Acer has availed itself of its right not to
support whatever the customer wants to put on the laptop.

You don't buy a Ford and expect them to tell you how to put a Chevy
engine in it. Don't feel so entitled.

I am a HUGE linux supporter and user but one has to learn to do this
with help that does not come from the mfgr.

There are many pages that will tell you how to use linux commands to
figure out which hardware you're dealing with and if it will work with
linux. This is if you can't find out through the mfgr.

I have put linux on a bunch of laptops, some that went without a hitch
and some that required some help here and there. If it's a wireless
card, you'll find some instructions around wpasupplicant and a wrapper
for the Windows driver. Works fine in spite of being a PITA to set up.

I'm pretty sure there's a linuxonlaptops.org, which should get you off
to a good start. Google is your friend.

Best of luck. Ask questions and maybe others here can help you.

Respectfully,

-jeff
