Robert:
I upgraded our two XP from IE7 to IE8 not long ago. IE7 apparently was deemed unsafe because of many identified vulnerabilities. IE8 is considerably slower and much, much larger than IE7, apparently the result of additional code to mitigate the vulnerabilities and add bells and whistles.
IE8 is called by several the "true blue" applications I use that are written in accordance with those requirements.
I much prefer Mozilla Firefox 3.0.11 and am about ready to go to 3.5.x. Apparently 3.1, 3.2, and 3.4 never were released.
All of my browsing histories, cookies, and cache and nearly all of everything else is wiped clean by Window Washer and the end of my computing session. Some prefer to wipe their Internet browsing each time they leave the Net, and that's possible too.
Hope this helps.
John
