XP Home is a real pain.  I have only worked with it a few times, just
enough to discover that it was lacking in the networking department at
very least.

So obviously it recognizes the networking hardware.
Have you tried typing ipconfig from the command prompt?
When you right click on my computer, can you get a tab telling you the 
computer's name and workgroup name?  Or are these blocked too?
