[Ham-Computers] Networking Problem (Hair-pulling puzzling)

To take the second question first, the new router is a Linksys BEFSR41
4-port. The predecessor that finally died yesterday was a BEFSR81, same as the new
one except 8 instead of 4-port. Before I found the 8-port, I had two 4-port
(same as new one) daisy-chained as our setup sometimes needs 5 ports.
Yesterday, I had reason to regret passing on both of the original 4-ports to list
members. :-(

I just checked again although I didn't think so. The Linksys routers (which
were designed to work with a Linksys Cable/DSL modem) can be set to block LAN
users from the Internet by either IP address range or MAC address range. But
nothing for blocking LAN access. The deaf machine can see the Xerox LAN
printer just fine. I use it as our browser home page as it comes up PDQ when you
start the browser.

I'll add that the network adaptors on both machines have three protocols
loaded. Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). These are what I was referring to
earlier when I said all of the drivers are set exactly the same except for
specific IP address on each machine. Because the Linksys routers don't have
provision for IP Address reservation I fool the router into always giving my machine
the same IP address by setting it static and then setting it back dynamic
(whereupon the router gives it back the same address) because the Xerox scanner is
set for a specific IP address to write files to. But I just did a test doing
the same thing with the other machine and it made no difference.
