[Ham-Computers] CD and DVD Drive Issues

Confused on why the CD would not be read on the DVD writer. It should read
all CDs (and write them too). Sounds like the CD is not readable on various
readers but only on the one that wrote it (used to be common in the old
days). Dan, KI6X

Subject: [Ham-Computers] CD and DVD Drive Issues

Group,

Several years ago, when I was adding a DVD-RW drive to the main machine
here, Aaron recommended I keep the CD-RW drive (or a CD-RW drive) and do all
the CD's with it. A couple of days ago, while working on the Navy ARB
manual, I proved he was right. I sell TM reprints and was saving backups of
the TIF files to CD. Several categories of manuals (TM 11's and NAVSHIPS
for example) were up to three or four CD's. When DVD's came along I shifted
most of the manual categories to them. But not all, as I still had the CD
drive and numerous blank CDR's and some manual categories (like NAVAER)
weren't close to filling up a CD.

When I went to backup the revised ARB file, I forgot that the backup was on
CD and put the CD into the DVD drive. It wouldn't read it but offered to
try to "fix" it for me. Fortunately, it was quite late (probably part of
the reason I didn't notice it was a CD) and I went to bed instead. Just now
I was sitting here with the bad "DVD" in my hand about to format a fresh
blank DVD and just re-do the backup from scratch when I suddenly saw that it
was a CD. Popped it into the CDRW drive and it read it just fine. :-)
