Brian,

PC100 isn't the only spec you need to specify.  Many laptops of this era (esp. Compaq's) used tighter timing and required RAM running at CAS Latency (CL) 2.  Also, memory density (how large in Mbits each individual chip is) plays a role - newer 256MB modules might use higher density components (fewer chips) and, thus, the memory controller in the V300 may not recognize the full capacity of the module.

For example, using Crucial's "Memory Advisor" tool, it shows V300 compatible RAM is CL2 and that memory density can be as large as 32Mbx64.  For reference:
