as I remember it, the more recent versions of Windows have made use of 
the Disk Administrator.

You also have to watch out with USB flash drives.  Sometimes they get 
`stuck' with a drive letter, meaning they prefer that letter.  When you 
plug them in, they don't get recognized at all.

For instance, if your OS didn't pick up the drive when you plugged it 
in, you'd check to see if something else took that letter.  If you 
change that to a different letter, the USB drive will be recognized.

Happened twice with Windows.  Hasn't happened under linux.
