It's a function of either or both the printer and the program. Some printers have the ability to print in "highlight" where it will print a color/black background with transparent print (which is "white" on white paper). If the printer doesn't support a "highlight" mode, then it's up to the program to send the output "highlighted" - usually as a graphic rather than text.
As mentioned earlier, most printers will treat "white" as "transparent" since most printers print on white paper and don't utilize any white ink.
Gene, when you "set the page background to blue", did you set the *screen's* background to blue or did you actually instruct Word97 to print "blue" background when printing? If set to "blue" print and you print to a B/W printer, you should have a print with transparent (white) lettering on a dark gray background. In Word97, you should be able to change the font properties to use "shading" or "highlighting" - set the font color to white and set the shading/highlighting to black. This should get you the results you're looking for...at least on a character-by-character basis.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] How do you print white letters?
I am experimenting with making some labels and have tried to print white letters (on blue paper) using MS Word 97.
I can set the page background to blue so I can see what is typed in white, but when I print the page nothing shows up.
Is printing in white a function of the printer or the program software, or both?
TIA
