My ex-eBay 4600 came with no software and nothing installed, so have
gone through the installation route.
If the computer is still running, I'd suggest you run Belarc Advisor,
which will tell what is installed on the computer. It's free. Try
www.belarc.com or search. This data could be useful later.
Did he actually contact Dell and check the price of a CD he doesn't
have? If I remember correctly, the CD isn't too expensive, but you
need to be the original owner and you can ask only once. I don't
have their parts department number, but customer service is 800-624-9897.
Dell forums provide an excellent resource. Go to
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/. You will need the
service tag to sign in, if I remember correctly (I'm elderly, too and
it's easy to forget). Maybe somebody there could help. The forums
are the reason I use Dell computers.
If I can be of more help, I'll be on a long weekend starting soon,
but will return Sunday night.
