Do you mean the area to the immediate left of the clock? This area is known as the "System Tray" (systray) and apps need to "put" themselves there. For those apps that don't use the systray, there are utilities available that will allow you to minimize an app to the systray rather than the task bar. I have never used any of these utilities as I have no need for them (plus they take up RAM and drive space). Here's one I just found via Google:
