The audio output of your computer should easily over-drive your recorder.
I have run into the problem you describe and have traced it to various
problems.
Shorted cable, mixing mono and stero components resulting in a partial
short, connecting to the "line out" rather than the amplified audio output,
having the volume slider on the audio control panel set low, which can
difficult to solve because things aren't always labeled as you would expect
and with the analog casette recorders I use currently, the record gain
turned down regardless of the computer being set up correctly.
