For whatever reason, the installer doesn't think it has the correct
permissions to install or at least access/create that registry key.

The registry is a very annoying concept, brought to us by MS. It has
info about programs, including licensing.

Did you get a similar error installing anything else? It would be a
good indication you have some sort of bug. It is preventing programs
from installing. One of the bugs I worked on last week did this with
Spybot.

Try going to malwarebytes.org and downloading their free software. If
it's a similar bug, this will kill it. Your best bet is to try these in
Safe Mode. Sometimes they can kill things in safe mode that they can't
kill in normal mode.

WARNING: if it is the same bug, it's known as a trojan. It installs and
sets up an emailer. It can be used to send spam to thousands of email
address or to steal your personal info and/or addresses.

Regardless, a cautious person would unplug the machine from the network
or internet until a correct diagnosis was made. You could be part of an
international botnet and not know it. If you have any personal or
financial information stored on the computer or if you used the computer
to order things online and put your info in, consider the computer
compromised. Check accounts and credit cards to make sure there's
nothing going on that you didn't initiate. Be safe.

Good luck!
