Ken,
I have had a similar problem in the past.  Without knowing it you may have
items in your start up folder that are trying to launch while scan disk is
operating , especially when first starting the computer.  Also windows and
any virus protection you are running may be trying to update automatically
while scan disk is running.  I solved my problem by not having so many items
in the start up file or disabling the start up file while running scan disk.
This can be accomplished by starting up in the safe mode also.  Hope this
helps some.  Even your spam fighter noted on your message may be the
culprit.
