Ken, linux is getting better and better on the desktop.
If you want to try it out and don't have a high speed connection to the
internet Goto
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
When the disk comes you can try it out before you actually install it
and see if you like it.
It will run totally from your cdrom drive, but any changes you make will
be lost when you reboot.
If you have a high speed connection goto
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Anything you would like to know you can learn on the internet with a
simple Google search.
