Ken: Another non-Doc answer to your Linux query:

A few thoughts about Linux. Everything is different, so there is a
steep learning curve in front of you. Unless you have taken some
Unix courses while at school, it's a little like you hit your head
and suddenly lost 80 to 90% of your computer knowledge. Linux comes
in many versions (distributions in Linux-speak), so selecting one
that's easy on the newcomer is a good idea.

I'll suggest Ubuntu. When I tried it a couple of years ago, it was
free. You could download it, or they would mail you free setup
disks. I should say almost free, as it's a very good idea to buy a
book like Beginning Ubuntu Linux by Kier Thomas to jump start your
Linux indoctrination. There are Ubuntu forums where you can ask
questions, and get answers surprisingly fast with no flaming. If you
want to see what it is like, one of the disks I received allowed you
to run Linux from a CD - no installation to your hard drive. The
other CD installed Ubuntu.

Another thought is a dual-boot system. It's relatively easy to set
up, and when you start your computer, you have the choice of Linux or
your existing operating system. Linux is default, so you only need
to choose when returning to MS. Uninstalling an operating system on
a dual boot system will affect your master boot record, making your
hard drive unusable until you fix the MBR. It's not a hard fix, however.

Good luck! Jim
