I know that I am not Doc and was not asked, but the distribution
of LINUX that I use called Slackware sells for $44.95 + $6 shipping
(for a 3 CD set in a nice plastic box) and you could install it on
every X86 (IBM clone) in the world with no additional payment needed.

Windows users that want to try a "windows like" version should
download and try "Ubuntu" which can be run from the CD before you
install anything. The nice thing about "Ubuntu" is every 6 months
they create a new version (latest version 8.0.4 was released 4-24-08)
and it contains the latest drivers for the latest hardware.
LINUX comes with 99% of the drivers that will be needed.

                              an unwanted side effect.
