Just throwing out an obvious in case. You did make sure it was not just a
bad monitor or video card showing the colors wrong? You do see black in the
choices.
I may have missed it, but since new PC probably Vista on it. In XP the
desktop font settings are: "Display Properties" (right click on desktop),
"Appearance", "Advanced" for text properties.

Tried that and it did not work. See my next post: ALL text is the light red
color and it is shadowed.
Any other ideas??

Try TOOLS, OPTIONS, COMPOSE, FONT SETTINGS.
Better yet, plain text and it won't be a problem.
Found in Outlook Express HELP, FORMAT, FONT.
