I used to subscribe to that old saying and still find it applicable in
many instances, but there is value in conducting periodic maintenance
and upgrades when needed. I have lots of stuff that 'aint broke' but
may not be functioning up to par or being all it can be.
Reminds me of another old saying, 'let a sleeping dog lay'. I find it
useful to kick sleeping dogs every now and then to make sure they are
still alive. That strange odor may not be an 'old people' smell after all.
As to operating systems, I used to swear by 98SE because I did not have
to swear at it.
Then I became interested in multi-media computing. Set-top boxes, PVRs,
DVDs, and such. 98SE is good but not good enough for that, so I got
involved with Linux and Mythtv. I learned a lot, but the most important
lesson was that I was spending too much time debugging and not enough
time enjoying the new capabilities. So I tried XP. XP with SP2 and all
the security patches appears to work reliably for me. And it does so
much more than 98SE could ever do.
Regards,
Frank Kamp
