Aaron and Jeff -- I followed the directions each of you provided to run CHKDSK.  Scheduling it from the command prompt, as Aaron suggested, yielded a 3-stage process: file verification, index verification, and security descriptor verification.  Jeff's method added 2 more stages: file data verification and free space verification.  In both cases, after the scan was complete a report was flashed on the screen for about 1 second, and then the computer continued the bootup process.  I wasn't able to read the darn report!  Would it be saved anywhere on the computer for a more liesurely viewing???  I have to say, I liked scandisk better.  At least that program displayed a graph that showed whether sectors were good or bad!  Too bad Microsoft had to go and "fix" it!
