Aaron and Jeff -- I followed the directions each of you provided to run CHKDSK. Scheduling it from the command prompt, as Aaron suggested, yielded a 3-stage process: file verification, index verification, and security descriptor verification. Jeff's method added 2 more stages: file data verification and free space verification. In both cases, after the scan was complete a report was flashed on the screen for about 1 second, and then the computer continued the bootup process. I wasn't able to read the darn report! Would it be saved anywhere on the computer for a more liesurely viewing??? I have to say, I liked scandisk better. At least that program displayed a graph that showed whether sectors were good or bad! Too bad Microsoft had to go and "fix" it!
