Gene,

MSCONFIG is a useful tool, but it doesn't show everything that starts with Windows. A better tool is "HiJackThis" (http://www.merijn.org).

Start "HiJackThis" and perform a "scan system and save log file".

If you're familiar with your system, go through and tick the checkbox of all the items that you don't believe should be started either with Windows or IE.

Click the "Fix" button to have HiJackThis remove the entries from the registry. It saves an undo for each fix, just in case you need to restore something.

When using this procedure, BE CAREFUL AS HIJACKTHIS DOESN'T KNOW GOOD FROM BAD - it just shows what's starting. If you're not sure of anything. E-mail me the log and I'll see if there's anything I don't recognize.

There are also several web forums where you can post your HiJackThis log and someone will analyze it and make recommendations. Sorry, can't think of any at this moment...if I remember, I'll post another message.

Don:

No, I am unable to edit the file, as explained in my original post.
