Thanks for all the good info.
I have run a spyware checker, virus scan (Three different programs), 
chkdsk/f, chkdsk/r, defrag and surface scan. No problems reported on any of 
the above.
Now, when I try to change something with msconfig, I get the following error 
message:

"An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. 
You man need to logon using a administrator account to make the specified 
changes"

I AM logged on as administrator (WIN XP BTW).

Any ideas????
