Ken,

It could be that your cable is bad or that there is a problem with the
camera or software on the computer.  With the problem originally being
intermittent, I would suspect your cable is bad.

As a cheap fix if your computer does not have the built in card reader for
the various camera cards is to buy one of those adaptors.  They run around
$20 or so and all you do is remove the camera card and plug it into that
adaptor.  Works great.  I have one built in to my new laptop and that is the
way I now download my pictures.  Much easier than plugging the camera cable
into the laptop.
