[Ham-Computers] Problem with Windows Update

OS is Windows 2000 Pro. I don't recall exactly when this problem first
started but it was at least several weeks ago. Sporadically the Update icon will
appear in the System Tray to install Update Rollup 1 for W2K SP4. When I try
to run it, it fails immediately. Last night I uninstalled all security fixes
and hotfixes and tried to install everything back from scratch (since SP4).
When it got to the rollup, it failed again. Today, I tried again, uninstalling
everything and then going to the Windows Update site and trying to download
and install only the rollup on the theory that there have been so many hotfixes
since the rollup, maybe it would no install over one of them. That was only
partly successful as after clicking the million or so security fixes to change
the + to - (and I thought only download and install the rollup), the updater
still downloaded and installed (or tried to install) the whole lot. It moved
the rollup to the #6 position from dead last but it still did not work. The
first thing the system did after the re-boot was to pop up and tell me I needed
to install the rollup. Which failed again.

I've tracked down (I think) all of the files on the machine that have the
KB891861 number in them. But I'm hesitant to do something like deleting all of
them as I have no idea what I'm doing at this point. I'll mention one
suspicious thing I did find. There are two files in the \Download\long alphanumeric
string\ folder that I wonder about. One is susdl.rq0, the other sus.rq1. The
first has 40+ lines. The second has about 6, which are exactly the same as
the first 6 in the first file. So wondered whether possibly the second file is
incomplete and causing the problem. But that's just a straw I clutched at.
