[Ham-Computers] FW: DVD burn issue

Dave,

There could be a number of reasons why this is happening. To narrow it down will require a bit more information.

What brand and model of DVD burner was it?

Are all of the discs themselves the same brand and from the same "spindle", or are they different?

What program was used to burn the data to the DVD's?

Can the original DVD-writer read the DVD's?

One of the most common problems is media compatibility between the DVD-writer and the reader. In fact, it's so common that you'll often find a warning label on the media package that states that the media may not work in all drives. Some combinations of burner and media work great, others don't. What works in one drive may not work in another. Sometimes, the burner burns a "perfect" DVD that works in 99% of all drives, yet one particualr drive won't read the disc. Suffice it to say, CD/DVD burning is not an "exact" science and compatibility issues are common.

Post some more details and let's see if we can figure this out.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] DVD burn issue

Not really ham related, so I'll understand if this isn't accepted.

I used an older DVD+ only burner to burn a great many disks,
including videos, program archives and hard drive backups. At the time,
they all worked fine. Now I find out that they don't seem to work on any
other DVD drive! I tried some in the two I now have at home and the new
one we have at work, and they all act as though the disk is blank. It
knows a disk is inserted, but it shows absolutely noting recorded on
them. The CDs I recorder in that same burner, however, seem to be just
fine - only the DVDs are affected.

Is this just a case of being thankful I didn't lose anything
priceless, or might there be some alternative (without going to the
expense of a data recovery company)?

Tnx es 73
