Uhhhh, might want to check that number - not sure where you got 6.5GB...

A single layer DVD (aka a DVD-5) holds about 4.37GB of data.
A dual-layer DVD (aka DVD-9) holds about 8.5GB of data.
A double-sided dual-layer DVD (aka DVD-18) holds about 17GB of data.

The new stuff:

BluRay holds about 25GB per layer, so dual-layer discs will hold about
50GB
HD-DVD holds about 20GB per layer, so dual-layer discs will hold about
40GB

HD-DVD is the "official" successor to DVD as it's sponsored by the DVD
Forum, the group that represents the DVD format.

BluRay was first to market and sponsored by the BluRay Disc Association.
It has a head start on HD-DVD and may maintain that lead due to Sony's
use of BluRay in the PlayStation 3.

The difference between BluRay and HD-DVD is primarily how the data is
written to the disc. Otherwise, technologically they're similar, though
each camp will claim some superiority over the other. Many companies
are members of both groups, so there'll probably be no clear winner any
time soon. Sorta like the "DVD +R" vs the "DVD -R" battle. LG as
already announced a player that will support both formats. Expect the
same from other companies soon.
