Thanks to all who replied here or diectly for the information. I believe I
am now beginning to understand the DVD landscape and how it differs from
that of CDs. What surprises me is that this unit is new, presently
available "everywhere", and from a long term and well known entertainment
electronics manufacturer. The dealer through whom I purchased it claims the
1 - 16X DVDs are "back compatible", and so the local Office Max "expert",
but obviously Aaron has demonstrated these opinions are incorrect. Now the
important issue... anybody know were I can get some 4X speed, blank
DVD-Rs... perhaps a hundred or so? This town is indeed picturesque and it
is perched on the edge of the mighty Sierra Nevadas, but from a technology
standpoint it is wasteland in the middle of a wilderness.
Thanks
John
Oops, forgot ... from algebra, X is the unknown; from hydraulics, a spurt is
a drip under pressure; therefore, and expert is some unknown drip under
pressure !
