Hmmm, never heard of a printer that prints a "test/alignment" page before every print. A "banner" page (a "front" page that identifies the printout), yes - this is usually a setting in the printer control panel. But banner pages are rarely enabled in home environments.
Do you happen to know what brand and model printer?

"My printer has started printing a test/alignment page every time I print
something. Might that be because the ink cartridges are almost empty?
Usually my computer will tell me when one of the cartridges needs to be
changed -- and then I always wait until it actully runs dry. I haven't
gotten any messages..."
