Yes, the same thing if I right click, then left click on properties, but
this happens when left clicking just once.

No viruses on either one and the problem has been happening since 1999 on
the older computer, so unlikely to be a virus.

The older computer has always used a PS\2 ball type mouse but the mouse has
varied depending on what was handy at the time, some of them fifteen years
old.  The newer computer has had a PS\2 ball type mouse an optical PS\2 and
now an optical USB mouse which used a PS\2-USB adapter at first, now
straight USB.  Same problem with all of them, no other sofware installed for
any of the different mouse types, just plug and play.  Now that I think
back, this newer computer had a different mother board, a 166 MHz MMX
something-or-other, same problem then too...
