1. Using the router's instructions (or looking it up on the web), get
into the router with your browser and choose the best and safest
settings for your network. It may work without this, but you want to
make sure you're not leaving holes for anyone else to come in.
2. Run a cable from each computer's network card to the router.
3. if you want the computers to `see' each other, make sure they have
the same workgroup name (right-click My Computer). If not, it doesn't
matter. If you set an IP address for either computer, reset it to
automatically obtain an address.
4. reboot and enjoy.
It would be a good idea to run a software firewall too, for extra
protection. zonelabs.com has a free or paid one called Zone Alarm that
I use. Don't forget antivirus and to keep Win2k patched.
