Fixed)

While resolving the drifting mouse problem on my Dell Inspiron laptop, I
found a handy shortcut to use when starting windows.
When the Windows screen appears that says "To begin, click your user name"
use the up-arrow key to select your name and Enter to continue. It's much
faster than reaching for the mouse.
This approach works fine for single users like myself; I'm not sure about
multiple users - maybe a side arrow needs to be used, too.
The drifting mouse problem was fixed by replacing the keyboard; there were
two in stock when I ordered mine from Dell. To my pleasant surprise,
installation instructions were included. Reading other posts on the Dell
forum, I'm not so sure I needed a new keyboard. The ribbon cable from the
keyboard to the motherboard rubs on the metal bottom of the motherboard,
eventually causing the mouse drift problem. The fix involved putting a
piece on antistatic plastic sheet on the metal bottom in this area. Maybe
just tape would be ok.
Should anyone else have a Dell laptop, let me briefly describe the keyboard
removal process.
Turn the computer over, and remove three machine screws labeled K and one
labeled K/L.
Turn the computer over again, and gently pry on the blank key area between
the right side arrow key and Enter to raise the keyboard a short distance.
Slide the keyboard to the right and rotate up. When disconnecting the
keyboard connector, grip the cable just above the connector. Do the same
when replacing the connector to avoid crimping the cable.
