You can D/L individual updates from http://download.microsoft.com.
Under "Product Families", click on "Windows". Then use the pull-down
list to choose Windows 98. You can then pick and choose which updates
you want to save - some of these are not Win98 specific, but apply to
Win98.
A better suggestion is to do a "fresh" rebuild of Win98 SE sometime
soon. Don't add any apps or device drivers except for the network
adapter (and maybe video). Then do a Windows Update and download all
"Critical" updates as well as IE. Once done, then create a drive image
or copy the entire contents of the "updated" Win98 SE to another drive.
Then use that as a base from which to "recover" from in the future.
Win98 is very PnP, so you can "port" it over to new hardware fairly
easily. Although this works, it won't be optimized except with the
motherboard it was first installed on or something very similar (the
"HAL" is created during install and can't be changed after the fact).
Once you do the restore, you can install hardware specific drivers
(chipset, audio, video, etc.) and create a "finished" installation.
BTW, I currently have such a "base" created in a "virtual machine" - I
use VMWare and VirtualPC and have Win98 images for both. They're
currently "up-to-date" and I can port the images, if necessary, to
"real" hardware. But, since VMWare and VirtualPC work so well, there's
no need for "real" hardware (except for those rare instances when some
app *demands* real hardware).
If you're interested in "virtual machines", you can download trial
versions of VMWare and VirtualPC.
http://www.vmware.com
http://www.microsoft.com/virtualpc
The VM's will run any OS that runs on the x86 platform (aka, a PC).
VMWare is much more flexible and is available for Windows and Linux.
VirtualPC is much easier to configure and is available for Windows and
MacOS. VPC also seems to be a bit faster than VMWare, but don't
officially support Linux emulations (though they will work).
There are also server versions available for server OS
emulation...rather than buying two (or more)servers, why not use one
dual or quad CPU server and emulate two or more "virtual" servers.
Saves money, space, and makes more efficient use of the available
processing power.
Man, I need to stop veering off on these tangents!

Subject: Re: [Ham-Computers] Speed... (was RE: Avoid one of
the"Critical"Windows Updates...)
"If you are running Win98, hopefully you're using "Second Edition". If
so, make sure that you run a Windows Update or download all the
available patches soon...I believe official "extended" support from
Microsoft ends this month - this means no more patches of any kind."
How can I donwload the patches and save them so when my computer crashes
in two years I can re-update when the updates are no longer available?
I recently re-installed everything on my computer and though I have the
400 KB
ie6 "install", I have to download a 12+ MB file that runs automatically.
I'd rather have it on disk and save the two hour download each time.
