Try using a different mouse. Turn off the computer, plug in another mouse,
see what happens. Does your computer have a mouse pointer in the center of
the keyboard? My first laptop had one that got tweaked which always placed
the mouse in the upper corner, using an external mouse didn't work because
the internal pointer always countered what the external did.
