[Ham-Computers] Maximum Number of Primary Partitions

I understand a hard drive can have a maximum of four primary partitions. 
The extended partition can hold a large number of partitions.  However, if 
an extended partition is used, is it counted as one of the four, leaving a 
maximum of three "real" primary partitions?
