Mike,
You may have stumbled across a possible cause without knowing it...
When you re-installed WinXP, did you install the chipset support drivers
for the motherboard? If not, then this may be your problem. Windows
uses "generic" support for devices until "native" support drivers are
installed. Unfortunately, "native" support for motherboard chipsets
often means "some things won't work" until the native support drivers
are installed. The parallel port is probably connected via a "bridge"
chip and won't be recognized until the native chipset drivers are
installed.
Check the ASUS website for the latest "approved" chipset drivers for
your motherboard. Better yet, goto the chipset manufacturer's website
for the "latest" drivers, especially if the motherboard is based on a
VIA chipset.
Here are some links...

Check the archives for more detailed posts about chipset drivers. I
believe I also posted a list of all the things I do/install when
configuration a system from scratch.
For reference, the Printer Control Panel will show all possible ports
you can attach a printer to regardless of whether or not the port
exists, so it's no a good indicator of whether or not Windows actually
detected a port on the system. Also, although it doesn't apply here,
Peter's suggestion is valid as WinXP's "generic" USB-to-parallel port
adapter driver doesn't assign an "LPT" designation - something to
consider for those with USB-to-parallel adapters.

Peter,
Thank you. The problem is LPT-1 isn't showing up in device manager. I'm
trying to use the parallel port, not a USB port.
LPT-1 and the printer worked before I did a clean reinstall of XP.
