[Ham-Computers] Compaq Startup Disk Needed

Jean,

Compaq has the "Restore" CD that shipped with the Prosario series of
machines keyed to that particular machine. It is highly unlikely it will
work on another owner's machine, even if it is the identical model, year,
configuration etc.

Everything on the "restore" CD is on the machine when you take the new
machine out of the box.

If the machine has a catastrophic failure, it may be necessary to use the
"emergency" Restore CD to return the entire hard drive contents back to the
same state it was in when it left the factory. Remember! If the Restore CD
is used, ALL data on the HD is forever lost!

Compaq will supply one of the Restore CDS to a licensed owner, generally at
no charge. At least this has been my experience in my twenty years of
affiliation with Compaq as a third party software developer. The gentleman
with the issues would be playing it safe by just calling Compaq, explaining
his plight and finding out if the company will send him one. If their policy
is unchanged, and he is the registered owner, chances are that they will. If
not, and "if" the Restore CD is keyed to each Compaq Prosario uniquely, he
has little choice but to purchase one.
