Aaron,
Thanks for the ideas...I am using the full-blown Outlook that comes with
Office 2003.
I will set up another email address and forward the email as you described.
To answer the question about the two laptops:
One is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29, which I take with me when mobile or in
the field with Ham Radio, Scouts, etc. I love the computer, but need to be
able to reference email there even I would prefer not to type a bunch on its
robust weather resistant keyboard.
The other is a more comfortable laptop (HP DV1541) to type on and is my
primary machine for email.
The idea of running a server doesn't allow me untethered access and so is
not realistic. However, could I download email and leave it on the server
as well?
Alternatively, could I create a rule there to download all my email to two
different accounts, one for each laptop?
This might be the best way if I have a server that could do this.

You didn't mention what version of Outlook you're using, but you can assign
a rule in "full" Outlook (as opposed to Outlook Express) to forward all
incomming messages to another user. When running the rule wizard (create
new rule), don't check any box on the first condition - this will make the
rule apply to all incomming messages. On the second condition, select
"forward it to people or distribution list". Then in the bottom box, click
on the "people or distribution list" link and enter the address(es) where
you want the e-mail forwarded to. Add any additional conditions, if needed,
and finish the rule. Then activate the rule so it applies automatically.
The above method is kludgy. You'll have "FW:" posted on every message that
was forwarded. Plus, you'll be tying up server resources. It may not be a
big thing for you, but for the people who manage the e-mail servers, more is
not better.
A better way would be to download the e-mail and then COPY the PST file to
the other laptop. Make the PST filename the same on both systems and then
just overwrite the existing file with the latest PST.
The best way to keep both in-sync is to keep the messages on the server.
Configure Outlook to not delete the message from the server after it's
downloaded. This way, you can use any number of computers to check the mail
and not worry about them being out-of-sync. The only limiting factor is how
much you can store in your ISP's mailbox. You can mitigate that by
periodically downloading all the old mail to a local PST and duplicating the
PST on the second laptop (see above). Once you've downloaded the mail to a
local PST, delete the old messages from the server to free up space.
On a side note, any particular reason why you need the messages on both
laptops?

p.s. BTW, with all the *valid* e-mail tags in your signature, you might
want to make sure you have a good spam filter! Ditto with the phone number.

Mike,
Thanks for your thoughts.
This could work, but I was hoping for less user intervention.
Auto-forwarded email would be best...any idea on how to create such a rule
in Outlook? When I was poking through the RULES tool, I couldn't figure out
a way. I can establish an additional email id to make that work if that is
needed.
