[Ham-Computers] Update: Problems with latest XP Security Patch

As an update, the problems Mike experienced is now documented and
confirmed by Microsoft. It affects systems that have HP support
software installed for scanners, printers, cameras, and some DVD/CD-RW
drives. It also affects systems with Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall
software.

The fix is to "whitelist" the HP software, but it requires a registry
mod. The fix for Kerio is to allow the update to work (whitelist the
update in Kerio).

Here's a link to the Microsoft KB article (and fixes):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Looks like it was posted this past weekend. BTW, I never would have
known about this update (918165) except that it started affecting
computers where I work - guess who has to research these types of
problems??? <g>

Mike, my guess is that you have some HP equipment connected to your
computer. Try this fix and see if it works.

Thank you, Aaron.

I disabled the "WebClient" service as you suggested. So far, everything
appears to be working.

As for malware and virii, I use Norton Anti-virus on a regular basis and
always use the current definitions. Nothing found. I also use Sypbot S &
D and cleaning any demons hasn't improved the MS security patch
situation.

I downloaded and ran HiJackThis and nothing looks out of the ordinary
(to me).

Whatever it is, the problem is repeatable. As soon as the patch is
removed, my system returns to full-function. I turned off automatic
updates and guess I'm stuck with this.
