I disabled the "WebClient" service as you suggested. So far, everything
appears to be working. 

As for malware and virii, I use Norton Anti-virus on a regular basis and
always use the current definitions. Nothing found. I also use Sypbot S & D
and cleaning any demons hasn't improved the MS security patch situation.

I downloaded and ran HiJackThis and nothing looks out of the ordinary (to
me).

Whatever it is, the problem is repeatable. As soon as the patch is removed,
my system returns to full-function. I turned off automatic updates and guess
I'm stuck with this.
