I'm not sure if this is going to work for you or not, but I have a Treo
(PDA/phone). It's much snappier than 56k and if you insist, you can
hook your computer to it and use it as a modem. You can also just read
your mail on the device itself. It works wherever cell phones work (for
data too).
When I'm really bored, I hook it to the car stereo and play mp3's.
[it has an SD slot which takes up to 2g cards]
Just a suggestion from way out in left field, where I've made my home :)
