I have a Netgear wired & wireless router connected to
the Westell WireSpeed DSL modem. It allows wired and
wireless connections to the Internet from anywhere in
the house.

To share files between multiple PC's, and preferably
to also handle backups, you will need a home server.

For security and stability you will want to set up a
home network server, that is also tied to the Internet,
under Linux or FreeBSD.

Both originate in a corporate environment where security
and stability controlled the design of the operating
system.

I am about to set us a similar server here but do not
yet have the plan in place. Linux servers tend to run
more efficiently than M$ so you won't need the same
levels of massive RAM and CPU speed, etc. to support
a similar M$ server.

Although it is not designed for service as a server
I am going to try to use Puppy Linux because I am
becoming familiar with it and it is really compact.
