Phil,

Nope, I don't like wireless, either, although many swear by it.  With a 
little malicious playing around, you can probably get into every wireless LAN on 
your block (because no one ever RTFM's).

Yes, you will need a router, unless the DSL modem is also one.  You might ask 
Ma Bell whether it is, but at least the last time I was buying a cable/DSL 
modem, I don't recall any of them being dual function.  I haven't looked 
recently.

I personally prefer LinkSys, but mainly because their boxes physically stack 
(my cable modem is also Linksys - the old one was always falling over every 
time I needed to do anything in that area).  Beyond that, I don't know of any 
brands to avoid, although someone else may.

After you get everything up and running, log into the box vendors sites and 
look for firmwear updates for your models (DSL modem and router).
