I use SAV at work and home - no complaints.

I've used Norton hd products that have seriously screwed up hard drives
(speeddisk, defrag, etc). No problems with some older versions of Ghost
but haven't tried more recent versions.

Don't neglect open-source programs, especially under linux. I installed
linux dual-boot on a 10M Dell laptop hard drive, totally using
open-source. Defrag, partition, etc, with total success.

In fact, a very good tool to have in your box is a live linux cdrom,
which you can boot to and run all sorts of repair tools on without
involving your hard drive (unless you're trying to).

Lastly, if you check pcworld.com, within the past week there was an
article on creating a live XP cdrom with the help of Bart's PE (all
free). It boots to XP and you can repair or operate on your system(s),
even with a dead or damaged hard drive.
