Eudora is a personal favorite.
Also check into Pegasus and the email clients that come with the Opera,
Netscape, and Firefox browsers.

NOTE: spyware/adware is not necessarily a function of the reader - it's
partially content. One thing you can do (unfortunately not with
Outlook) is to turn off HTML mail. Yes, it disables the pretty pictures
and backgrounds, but I can live with that.
Outlook is particularly buggy and full of holes, no matter how many
times they patch it. Imagine a mailer that won't let you turn off
HTML....
If you get really adventurous, linux has a TON of open-source email
clients.
