SMIL (pronounced "smile") stands for "Synchronized Multimedia Integration
Language". Looks like it's partially based on XML and is designed for
adding streaming multimedia content to webpages.

Rev 1 was released by the W3C (a WWW standards group) back in 1999. I'm not
familiar with the specifics of .SMIL, but you can find a *lot* of info about
it by going to Google and entering .SMIL as the search phrase.

Most likely, you clicked on a link to a .SMIL applet that will play
streaming audio in your browser. You probably can't download the music
itself as a .WAV, .MP3, .OGG, AAC, whatever (at least not without a tool to
capture streaming audio).

Subject: [Ham-Computers] .smil files

Does anyone know what a .smil file is? I tried to download a music file
from a website, and the gray download box appeared like usual, and it asked
if I wanted to download "filename.smil" so since I'm not familiar, I didn't
proceed. Is this a safe file? I have Windows Media Player--will these
files play in WMP?

Thanks,

Lu
