"Recently (last three or four days maybe), I've noticed that sometimes when
I start Explorer, under Desktop is My Computer on down to the normal bottom
of the list(Applications) followed by My Documents on down to the bottom
again. Usually, when it exhibits this strange behavior, closing it and
reopening it squares it away but sometimes, it only straightens out (as a
few minutes ago) after I've close most of the open applications."

Hi Robert,
I'm having a little difficulty "visualizing" the problem. I can picture the
icons in their order, but I'm not clear on the "...followed by My Docs on
down to the bottom again."
If you can send me a screen shot of both "situations", it'll help me better
understand the problem. To do a screen capture, press the <Prnt Scrn>
button. Then open "Paint" (in the Accessories group) and do an "Edit" -->
"Paste". This should paste a screen capture of the desktop in Paint. Then
save the file.
Off the top of my head, it might be related to the icon cache that Windows
keeps. This cache gets corrupted at times and causes icon problems. The
icon cache is a file that can be deleted and Windows will recreate it at
boot. Search the drive for "iconcache.db" and delete. It's a hidden system
file, so you'll need to turn on the ability to see hidden and system
protected files. Or, try these two lines in a command prompt...
attrib -s -h %userprofile%\locals~1\applic~1\iconcache.db
del %userprofile%\locals~1\applic~1\iconcache.db
This will remove the hidden/system attributes and then delete the file for
the user currently logged in. Can't guarantee it will fix your particular
problem...just a thought.
When you can, send the screenshots via PM so I can get a better grasp of the
situation.
