that's why I am here on the list
an no it functioned as slave till my 20 gig crashed then I moved it to pri
master and now I want it slaved again as i got a new 40 gig for pri master

OK, this *may* be the source of the problem.
There are certain drives that will not function as
slave drives. They generally are manufacturing
seconds that are sold on the secondary market.
Also, are you certain that your cables are connected
from motherboard to the drives in the proper order?
Have you checked your BIOS settings to be sure it
has the drive set up with the correct values?
It is probably something simple that you'd normally
catch but you now will need a second set of eyes on
it because you have been staring at it too long ...
been there done that!
