My mother recently had the same problem that you are having and I cursed 
tried to find a solution, including reinstalling M$ Office, IE and OE, 
searching the MS Knowledge Base, all without luck.

My mother recently purchased MS Publisher 2003 and installed that.

Lo and Behold, the spellcheck now works.!!!!!! Don't ask me why or even 
how, but if you can get hold of even an academic version of Publisher, 
give it a try at fixing the spellcheck problem. :))
