Don,

I don't know the answer to your question (didn't actually know that there had 
ever been a difference between PCI slots) but is the computer New New, or 
just new to you?  Reason I ask is that the last several system boards we've had 
here (since say '97 anyway) all had/have at least one parallel and two serial 
ports integrated into the system board, so they don't take up a slot.  Some 
have the 9 or 25 pin connectors mounted on the edge of the board and some have 
had the ports come to a DIP header, and were supplied with a cable or cables 
with DIP connector on one end and serial connector in the metal angle bracket on 
the other.
