At 1:00 in the morning, the thought process sometimes forgets to include
minor details. The order of operations should be:

Install Windows
Install chipset support drivers

Install anything else from here, preferrably in the following order...
Any additional computer specific drivers (such as laptop power management
support)
  Video drivers
  Audio drivers
  Networking drivers
  Modem drivers
  Remaining hardware drivers

Then Windows Updates
Critical updates *prior* to the current service pack (this ensures that
earlier critical updates are in-place in case the Service Pack needs to be
uninstalled due to compatibility issues)
  Service Packs
Additional critical updates (after the Service Pack)
Internet Explorer (Service pack for existing or update to latest)
Additional critical updates for Internet Explorer update
Certain "recommended" updates, depending on your computer configuration.

Install a good Anti-Virus program and scan for virii.

At this point, I recommend that an "image" backup of the system be
performed. This will allow you to restore the system to a known good "base"
in case of a catastrophic event (e.g. drive crash) or when you think you
need to (e.g. "whoops" event).

Then install any applications you typically use and then create another
image. This will give you two different places where you can restore the
system to - one without and one with the applications. If at anytime you
run into a major problem with your computer, backup your data/documents and
restore one of these images...no need to re-install the OS from scratch
anymore.

Aaron,

How do you install anything before installing the Windows OS? I was under
the impression that you had to have an OS installed before you could do
anything.
